Health Insurance

Long-term Care Insurance

  • Available to eligible state employees, their spouses, parents and parents-in-law. 
  • Premiums are paid by the employee through payroll deduction. All other participants are billed directly.
  • Services for long-term care can be provided in the form of home care, assisted living facilities, adult day care or nursing facilities.

Short-Term and Long-Term Disability

  • Covers partial or total disability.
  • Income replacement for qualified periods of incapacity over 7 calendar days.
  • Income replacement based on years of service.
  • Increased benefits for catastrophic disability.
  • Long-term disability begins after 6 months of short- term disability and may continue to normal retirement age.

Retirement

  • Retirement funded by a 5% pre-tax salary reduction plan.
  • Service Retirement – vested after 5 years of service.
  • Sworn employees may retire with full benefits:
    • Age 50 with 25 years of service.
    • Age 60 with 5 years of service.
    • Receive supplement to retirement benefit with 20 years of hazardous duty service. The supplement is payable until  social security age.
  • Provisions for line-of-duty death in service.

Deferred Compensation

Voluntary program that permits you to build retirement savings on a pre-tax basis:

  • You choose the method of payment and commencement date of your payments.
  • Contributions are deducted from salary each pay period.
  • Taxes are paid when your funds are paid to you.
  • Cash Match variable depending upon funding (Currently up to $20/pay period, if deferring at least $40/pay period).

Years of Service:

  • 0-5 years: 4 hours per pay period
  • 5 years: 5 hours per pay period
  • 10 years: 6 hours per pay period
  • 15 years: 7 hours per pay period
  • 20 years: 8 hours per pay period
  • 25 years: 9 hours per pay period

Family & Personal Leave

  • Months of State Service:
    • Less than 120 (10 years): 32 hours (4 days) of leave
    • 120 or more (Over 10 years): 40 hours (5 days) of leave

Hiring Process

For The Virginia State Police

The Virginia State Police is committed to recruiting and selecting only the most qualified applicants, while maintaining a workforce that reflects the communities we serve and protect. These phases do require applicants, to include those out-of-state, to travel at your own expense to Virginia State Police facilities to complete.

Phase I (A): Written Test

Once we have received your application, you will be sent information to register for the Written Test through the National Testing Network.  A recruiter will reach out to begin the hiring process with you.

Phase I (B): Work Performance Test

Applicant will complete an obstacle course to determine their physical readiness to become a Virginia State Trooper.

Phase II (A): Polygraph Examination

All applicants who successfully complete Phase I will be contacted and arrangements made for the administration of a polygraph examination at a Virginia State Police Division Headquarters

Phase II (B): Background Investigation

An extensive background investigation is conducted on all applicants who proceed to Phase II of the Trooper hiring process.

Phase III: Medical and Psychological Evaluations

Applicants who successfully complete the background investigation may be invited for complete medical and psychological evaluations. Applicants passing this phase MAY be offered employment.
